My fascination with Christmas lights and other decorations began as a child. I was the oldest son in a farming family and only went into town once every week or so. During the Christmas season my parents would put my brother and I into the car and drive into town to see the outside decorations that adorned the homes of the “city folk”. Our town was decorated like most other towns of the 50’s and 60’s. There were lighted garlands across the streets and every store had decorations in the windows. The Woolworth store, J.C. Penny, Sears, and Western Auto, all held the wishes of boys and girls as we awaited the arrival of Christmas vacation and the greatest morning of the whole year. Memories of putting up the Christmas Tree, visits from family and neighbors , special programs at church and the Christmas Pageant at school, are firmly etched in my mind. Those memories re-emerge every Christmas. When I had my own family, I tried to give them those same kind of memories including the decorations. As the number of my decorations grew, I decided to give this obsession a Name. I call it: “Lighting Up Mayton” During the month of December, come on by and see what I’m talking about. Over 50,000 lights, (many of them computer-controlled) Mega-Trees (1 is 27 feet tall), Plywood Cutouts, Mini-Trees and low-power FM radio.
That’s the obsession now here is the purpose. I am a collection point for new, unwrapped toys for the children of the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. We also accept cash donations which are used for benevolent causes at Union Baptist Church. |
